The Zodiac Killer

The Zodiac Killer was a serial killer that operated in Northern California in the late 1960's to the early part of the 1970's .

The killers identify remains a mystery.

From Benicia , Vallejo , Lake Berryesea , San Francisco The Zodiac Killer hunted for potential victims.

He claimed the lives of four men and three women between the ages of 16 and 20 .

The killers name originated through a series of taunting letters he sent to police and the local Bay Area Press .

The letters included four cryptograms (or ciphers).
During the investigation the authorities had so much trouble with these ciphers that they asked both the C.I.A. , F.B.I. , and the N.S.A. to solve them , But none these agencies were able to brake them

Only one of these cryptograms  were ever broken . The identity of the individual who broke the cipher is not known expect that the person was a schoolteacher.

To this very day the case is still open .
In the files of the San Francisco police department it is labeled as "Inactive" .

The case file is still open in Vallejo , Napa Valley , and Salano County. Even the California Department of Justice maintains an open case on the Zodiac Killer.

During the 80's another killer surfaced in New York City claiming the Zodiac Killer name .

The New York City Zodiac Killer through stalking his victims would find out their astrological sign and then take their lives .

This killer only claimed the lives of two or three people.

Although this Zodiac Killer did not succeed in now being as legendary or nearly as frightening as the original he did cause some fear in the streets of New York City.

In 2007 Director David Fincher brought the case to the big screen.
The film starred Jake Gyllenhaal , Mark Ruffalo , and Robert Downey Jr.
