Ensnared Production Begins, Spade Lion Productions Is Born!
Big talent signs on for local Limerick companies’ first flick!
Spade Lion Productions may be working on its first short film, but that hasn't stopped the company securing one of Limerick’s biggest actors to star in their short, titled “Ensnared”.
Spade Lion Production was founded by internationally acclaimed magician Steve Spade and developer/writer Paddy Murphy.
Ensnared is the horrific tale of a man who can’t trust his own eyes and is desperately hunting closure. The movie is Part lynchian surrealist piece, part Christopher Nolan-esque thriller. Ensnared is based on an award winning short story by Murphy that was released earlier this year.
Kevin Kiely Jnr is one of Limerick’s most promising young actors.
In recent years Kevin has featured alongside Hollywood icons like Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt in titles like The Dark Knight Rises and World War Z.
Now Kiely Jnr. is primed to star in the horror short, Ensnared, the first offering from new Limerick based production company “Spade Lion Productions”.
“The idea with Ensnared was to write something intrinsically horrific, psychologically, as opposed to something with a load of jump scares.”- Murphy says of the short. “The idea is that you should come away from Ensnared questioning everything. It will hopefully dwell in audience’s minds long after the credits roll.
The short is being produced by Spade who was confident about the story from the moment he heard it.
“I was in the car driving to Dublin with Paddy, when I first heard the story. I remember it just hit me like a ten ton truck. I was like... we have to make this. Immediately, I knew that Kevin Kiely Jnr. had to be the lead...” - says Spade.
Various other Limerick talent is attached to the project including Andrew Phayer, Adam Moylan and Aaron Walsh of First Live TV and local artist Mary O Doherty who is crafting some delectably dark artwork to be used in the movie.
“It’s the story of a tortured artist... and I think most artists can relate to that.” says O Doherty, who is tasked with bringing a sense of dread to proceedings with her paintings and sketches.
This is the first in a series of planned short films from Spade Lion Productions, who are also offering their video production, screenwriting and editing skills for hire. The company is also planning several theatrical productions later in the year, some involving Mr. Steve Spade himself.
“Paddy and I are currently writing a stage show. It’s not necessarily a magic show, but there are definitely illusions and effects in it. It’s going to have a much darker tone than shows I’ve done in the past and is likely to shock audiences in a totally unique way. It’s very exciting.”- Says Spade.
Paddy Murphy was eager to discuss the potential for the short in relation to the upcoming International Richard Harris Film Festival. “We definitely want to enter Ensnared in the contest, so long as it’s shot and edited by the submission date. We have such a great team involved that I’d love to see the film get the same reception as the story it’s based on”.
Ensnared begins shooting next week in an undisclosed location!
