Underworld fans, we may have some good news for you!
Len Wiseman, the creator of Underworld, is developing a television show based on the franchise, which started back in 2003. Wiseman's production company Sketch Films and Sony Entertainment are developing the show and Wiseman will be an executive producer.
All we know about the project so far is what Wiseman has said, which is “The series will be a pretty big departure from the films,” and “I don’t want to say it’s more adult, but it’s definitely less comic book in its tone and character.”
Currently, there is no home for the project but Wiseman is hoping for it to land on a premium cable or a digital service.
For anyone who hasn't been keeping up with the franchise, there are five movies total. Underworld (2003), Underworld: Evolution (2006), Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009), Underworld: The Awakening (2012) and Underworld: Blood Wars (2017). Now, Wiseman only directed the first two films and then served as a producer for the last three.
I've got mixed emotions about this. I'm a fan of the movies, but I'm not sure I'm extremely happy about a possible television series. I think it all depends on where the show lands, be it cable or digital service. One platform could give it a bit more freedom to move around and one could turn it into a Vampire vs Werewolf soap opera, which means it could be anything from The Walking Dead to... the Vampire Diaries. Unfortunately, not all cable channels are risk takers like the AMC channel, so I hope it lands somewhere that is willing to take risks and give it the freedom to become something worth watching.
